At the Sacramento Zoo, the African Lion cubs, their dam and sire are now on exhibit.   Both parents are keeping a close eye on the 12-week-old trio as they romp around the exhibit between lengthy cat naps.  The Sacramento Zoo participates in the Lion Species Survival Plan® (SSP). The Lion SSP works with captive populations to increase awareness of the problems that face this big cat, which is considered regionally endangered.  http://www.saczoo.org/

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park celebrates the anniversary of James Marshall’s discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill. Visitors can tour the site with “James Marshall, John Sutter, and Jenny Wimmer,” as they tell stories about the gold rush.  Saturday’s celebration includes gold panning, period music, contra dancing, wagon rides, historic demonstrations, tin punching, blacksmithing, children’s games, and food.  “Gold Discovery Day” is free, but there is a park day use fee of $8 per vehicle.  www.marshallgold.org

Illusionist Kevin Warren performs a family-friendly mix of grand illusions, close up magic, and invites audience participation on Saturday at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center in Sacramento.  Shows are at 2pm and 7pm.  Admission is $10.  www.benarts.org
